A New Beginning: Restarting My Online Business Journey with Evidence-Based Thinking

 

Introduction

My name is Eric, and my relationship with online business did not begin recently. It started more than a decade ago, around 2011 or 2012, during a period when online advertising programmes and digital income opportunities were becoming increasingly popular. Like many people discovering the possibility of earning online for the first time, I was filled with hope, curiosity, and the belief that the internet could provide a better financial future.

Over the years, however, my journey has not been smooth or consistent. It has been characterised by periods of enthusiasm, moments of small success, long breaks, and, most importantly, many valuable lessons learned through experience. This blog represents a new chapter in that journey.

A Professional Background That Shaped My Perspective

In my professional life, I come from a public health background, a field that is deeply rooted in the principle of evidence-based decision-making. In public health, we do not act based on promises, assumptions, or quick solutions. Instead, we rely on research, data, and long-term outcomes to guide decisions and protect people from harm.

For many years, I did not fully appreciate how strongly this same principle applies to online business. Just as in health, where quick fixes often lead to long-term problems, the online world contains many opportunities that appear attractive at first but lack sustainability and reliable evidence of success.

It took me years to recognise that building income online requires the same discipline as maintaining good health: patience, informed choices, and a long-term perspective.

Years of Exploration and Hard Lessons

Since beginning my online journey over a decade ago, I have explored a wide range of online income activities. At different times, I engaged in affiliate marketing, experimented with running online shops and dropshipping products sourced from platforms such as Alibaba, participated in online advertising revenue-sharing programmes, and attempted forex and cryptocurrency trading.

These experiences produced mixed outcomes. There were occasions when I earned small amounts of income, which provided encouragement and hope. However, there were also times when I lost money, particularly when I followed opportunities that promised high and rapid returns without fully understanding their risks.

Looking back, I now realise that many of my decisions were made without a clear strategy or solid foundation of knowledge. Like many beginners, I was often drawn towards the idea of quick results rather than focusing on long-term skill development.

A Turning Point in December 2025

In December 2025, I reached a significant moment of reflection. After years of moving in and out of online business, I realised that I needed to make a clear decision. I could either continue chasing opportunities without direction, or I could take a more structured, serious, and evidence-based approach.

During this period, my wife and close friends played an important role in encouraging me. They reminded me that I had gained a considerable amount of knowledge over the years. They urged me to view my past experiences not simply as failures, but as valuable lessons that could help others avoid similar mistakes.

Their encouragement inspired me to make a firm commitment to restart my online business journey with clarity, purpose, and a long-term mindset.

Rediscovering the Principles of Attraction Marketing

As part of rebuilding my approach, I returned to studying fundamental concepts of online business. One of the most influential ideas I revisited was the principle of attraction marketing, particularly as explained by Mike Dillard in his book Magnetic Sponsoring.

This concept resonated strongly with me because it shifted the focus away from chasing people or promoting opportunities aggressively. Instead, it emphasises positioning oneself as a source of value, knowledge, and trust so that people are naturally drawn to you over time.

For me, this approach aligned closely with my public health perspective. It reinforced the importance of education, credibility, and long-term thinking as the foundation for sustainable success.

From Quick Income Thinking to Building Healthy Income

One of the most important changes in my mindset has been the transition from pursuing quick income to focusing on what I now describe as building healthy income. Just as health cannot be achieved through instant solutions, financial stability online cannot be built through shortcuts.

Healthy income involves developing genuine skills, making informed decisions, understanding risks, and building sustainable systems over time. It requires patience, consistency, and a commitment to continuous learning.

This realisation has fundamentally changed how I approach online business today.
